library rotterdam

I was asked to design a new system of wayfinding for the central library in Rotterdam. I used my architectural knowledge to analyse the building, designed by Bakema in the early eighties. It turned out, every floorplan had different shape, size, organization and function. The only backbone was the escalatorsystem. Situated in a void, in the heart of the building, it was visible from all sides. I used it, both as a logo and as a manner of wayfinding. I created anamorphic signing that turns up when moving up the escalator. People instinctively know where they are arriving.
